Gain the confidence, strategies, and hands-on experience you need to sharpen your goals, chart the course, and practice inclusive decision-making today.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mind the \u201chow\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some goals don\u2019t\u2014at face value\u2014specifically promote equity and inclusion, so you\u2019ll want to specify how you&#8217;re mitigating disparate impact or advancing equity and inclusion in your<em> tactics, benchmarks, or metrics<\/em>. Below are two examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your development team may have an outcome goal to \u201craise $X by Y to cover this year\u2019s budget and 3 months\u2019 operating reserve.\u201d There are many ways to do this, and one of them might include this activity goal: \u201crecruit, retain, and develop a total of 30,000 dues-paying members, at least X% of whom identify as [people of color \/ women \/ trans or gender non-conforming \/ poor \/ Spanish-speaking].\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your policy team might have a goal to create and disseminate X policy briefs on immigration by the end of the year. In order to be more inclusive and equitable in the process, you might say explicitly: \u201cWe will consult with X coalition or Y community leaders to get feedback before finalizing.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ask yourself:<\/strong> If the outcome specified in the goal isn\u2019t specifically promoting equity and inclusion, is the process of achieving this goal going to improve equity and inclusion on our team\/organization?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Check for unintentional disparate impact<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A big part of developing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementcenter.org\/resources\/smartie-goals-worksheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SMARTIE goal<\/a> is checking for unintentional disparate impact along lines of identity and power and finding ways to mitigate that impact. But sometimes, you just don\u2019t have enough information (whether that\u2019s precedent or perspective) to anticipate unintended consequences. If that\u2019s the case, make sure you\u2019re explicit about how and when you\u2019ll check for it along the way. Below are two examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cLower overhead costs by $X by [date]\u201d can be improved by adding \u201c\u2026with quarterly check-ins with staff to check for negative disparate impact of cost savings.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cIncrease representation of staff with marginalized identities in our hiring processes by [date]\u201d can be improved with the addition of \u201c&#8230;with checks to ensure staff with marginalized identities aren\u2019t carrying an unequal share of the work.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ask yourself:<\/strong> What unintended disparate impact might result from this goal? Who have I consulted to check for unintended negative consequences? Any key stakeholders I\u2019m missing from this list?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make your metrics matter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a fine line between inclusion and tokenism. What\u2019s the difference? Power. In most cases, it\u2019s not enough to tack on \u201c\u2026and x number of volunteers\/new hires\/spokespeople should be people of color\u201d unless the people you\u2019re trying to include will be able to influence the work in a meaningful way. Here\u2019s an example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cBuild a volunteer team of 100 door-to-door canvassers by May, with at least 10% people of color\u201d is a much different goal than \u201cBuild a volunteer team of 100 door-to-door canvassers by May, with at least 10 people of color recruited as volunteer leaders first, so that they can help shape the way we run the canvasses.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ask yourself:<\/strong> If I added an outcome or activity goal related to a specific marginalized community, will achieving this goal help build power and\/or shrink disparities for this community?
