Will 2024 out-do the chaos of 2020? Hopefully not. But, we\u2019re sharing these tips again because\u2014for better or worse\u2014they still hold true (even if your work isn\u2019t directly related to electoral politics):<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>1. Ground in purpose.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With so much going on, it\u2019s critical to drill down on your organization\u2019s purpose and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementcenter.org\/resources\/how-to-actually-reprioritize\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">focus on your priorities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some questions to ask early on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the ways the election could impact my team (personally or professionally)? Should our priorities adjust to account for these impacts? If so, how?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do we <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need to accomplish in the next few months? What can we <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/bryancollinseurope\/2018\/06\/14\/effective-time-management\/?sh=6970b6a81938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drop or defer?<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you believe that your team will be greatly impacted by the election, you might need to let go of plans that would normally take precedence (yes, you might need to put off performance evaluations!). <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>2. Create some space.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Consider assigning this to your election planning team\u2014below.) When stakes feel high and everything is moving at a fast clip, sometimes people just need time and space to breathe. Where can you offer more flexibility and spaciousness? If you\u2019re having trouble coming up with ideas, here are two examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At TMC, managers sometimes carve out time in team meetings to allow staff to handle whatever is stressing them out the most\u2014whether that\u2019s training prep, responding to a client, finishing timesheets, or even folding laundry! <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">In 2020, one of our clients sent <a style=\"font-size: revert; background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.managementcenter.org\/resources\/sample-pre-election-email-to-staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this lovely email to their staff<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, setting the expectation for staff to ask for what they needed, and setting aside some optional space the day after election day for staff to come together and process.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a senior leader: think through relevant personnel policies with an eye towards flexibility and equity. Will you give time off for staff to volunteer, vote (you might be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nolo.com\/legal-encyclopedia\/taking-time-off-voting-jury-29708.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legally required<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to!), or engage in nonpartisan (if you\u2019re a 501(c)(3)) protest? If so, will it be on a case-by-case basis, or will you create an org-wide policy? If you\u2019re giving time off for protest, consult with your lawyer to understand risks and mitigations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also consider adding planned office closures to the calendar over the next few months or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementcenter.org\/resources\/sample-email-to-staff-announcing-mental-health-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repurposing already-scheduled staff time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially if your organization is in the thick of election work. Moments of organizational pause (even a half day here and there) ensure that everyone takes a minimum amount of time to rest, recover, and reset. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>3. <b>Assemble an election planning\/response team.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If 2020 was any example, we can\u2019t count on election day to be the \u201cfinish line.\u201d For many managers, election day will feel like just another mile marker in a race of unknowable length (10k? Marathon?!) as ballots are counted, sectors reassemble, and masses mobilize. Whether it\u2019s your leadership team, a new working group, or an individual staff person (maybe it\u2019s you!), make it someone\u2019s job to answer this question: given everything going on in the world, what can we do to set our team up for success in the coming weeks? Our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementcenter.org\/resources\/how-to-scenario-plan-for-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scenario-Planning tools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This team (or person) should consider possible election outcomes and prepare for the potential impacts on your school or organization, your team, and your communities. After election day, it may need to function like a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementcenter.org\/resources\/tips-for-running-an-effective-covid-19-rapid-response-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rapid response team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, helping your organization navigate and make decisions as new developments arise.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>4. <b>Check in (so they don\u2019t check out).<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many, if not most, people experience uncertainty, divisiveness, and urgency during election seasons. We also all experience the stakes and effects of each election differently. While some people may cope by throwing themselves into work, others might become overwhelmed, unfocused, or just plain checked out. Acknowledge what\u2019s happening, hear how your people are doing, and inject purpose, empowerment, and support in your next check-in. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementcenter.org\/resources\/2020-election-season-check-ins-add-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s one way to approach it.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>5. <b>Plan for connection and communication in the immediate aftermath.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After any major event, the leadership response within the first 24-48 hours sets the tone for moving forward, and elections are no different. Consider scheduling a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementcenter.org\/resources\/post-election-day-debrief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post-Election Day debrief<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so people can connect and process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use these questions to think through how you\u2019ll communicate with your team:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What will it be like for staff to show up to work the day(s) after election day?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementcenter.org\/resources\/building-your-emotional-resilience-muscle-%f0%9f%92%aa%f0%9f%8f%bd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ground yourself and hold space<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the myriad feelings and reactions on your team?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will you equip your team to serve your community and stakeholders?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will you handle <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementcenter.org\/resources\/weaving-it-all-together-how-to-talk-about-moving-forward\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">internal communication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with your team about your purpose, plans, and policies?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019d love to hear from you!
