While there\u2019s the potential for that to be true, how you package and deliver it matters. To that end, here are our most important tips for giving feedback.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Don&#8217;t try to hide it.<\/h3>\n<p>This isn\u2019t like sneaking spinach into a mango smoothie to get someone to eat more vegetables. You can\u2019t trick someone into receiving feedback. Instead, be clear when you\u2019re about to give feedback, even if that means adopting a go-to phrase to initiate it every time. Examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI have some feedback on X! Can I share it?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI\u2019m concerned X isn\u2019t on track. Can we schedule a time today to talk about it?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2. Do systematize it.<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re someone who feels stressed or awkward about giving feedback, systematizing is a must. If you wait until feedback is urgent, you\u2019ll have missed several opportunities to give it. More importantly, systematizing feedback helps mitigate bias. We tend to feel more comfortable sharing feedback with people who are like us or to whom we feel close. This means that\u2014unless you intentionally choose otherwise\u2014your staff who have marginalized identities that are different from yours probably receive less feedback overall. Less feedback = fewer opportunities to grow! Here are ways to systematize:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Include it in your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.managementcenter.org\/resources\/check-meetings-sample-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">check-in agenda<\/a> so it\u2019s just part of what you discuss each week.<\/li>\n<li>For projects, get in the habit of scheduling debriefs.<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementcenter.org\/resources\/new-hire-onboarding-agenda-for-manager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">onboarding a new staff member<\/a> or starting a new manager\/staff relationship, build in giving and soliciting feedback from the start, so it becomes normal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>3. Don\u2019t try to \u201csoften the blow\u201d of critical feedback with praise.<\/h3>\n<p>This usually comes off as insincere. Even if the praise is real, it gets lost amid the corrective feedback because people tend to overweight the negative. The one exception to this tip is if you\u2019ve systematized giving feedback such that you give both praise and corrective feedback in the same sitting on a regular basis\u2014if that\u2019s the case, keep it up!<\/p>\n<h3>4. Do separate outcomes from effort (and recognize it!).<\/h3>\n<p>You can give corrective feedback on an outcome that didn\u2019t meet expectations while acknowledging the effort that went into it. Communicate that you value the time and labor spent and partner to achieve better results in the future (\u201cI know that you worked really hard on pulling off this event. I think the registration process took a little longer than either of us expected, so let\u2019s talk about how we can improve on that in the future.\u201d).<\/p>\n<h3>5. Don\u2019t forget to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementcenter.org\/resources\/how-to-receive-feedback-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">model receptivity<\/a> to feedback.<\/h3>\n<p>Invite feedback from your staff, and share your own self-reflections. You can do this generally (\u201cIs there anything I could be doing differently?\u201d) and specifically (\u201cI didn\u2019t set aside enough time to prepare for X, and as a result, Y happened.\u201d). Not only is this an opportunity to practice and model self-awareness, a growth mindset, and vulnerability, it can also help your staff be more receptive to getting feedback and more willing to share
