So, what do you do when you\u2019re feeling overwhelmed at work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can\u2019t take the overwhelm away, but we can help you figure out what to do about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><em>Struggling to manage through crisis and uncertainty? <\/em><\/strong><em>You&#8217;re not alone. <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementcenter.org\/sign-up-for-our-newsletter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Join our newsletter<\/em><\/a><em> for more strategies, resources, and support.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Do I Stop Feeling Overwhelmed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For starters, take a deep breath and remind yourself that <strong>it\u2019s okay to feel this way.<\/strong> Who could blame you? You\u2019re not only responsible for your work, results, and wellbeing, you\u2019re also supporting the people you manage and the communities who rely on your organization. And in many cases, you\u2019re impacted by what\u2019s going on in the world or workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this pressure gets compounded if you feel like you don\u2019t have enough support, struggle with anxiety or insecurity, or have a hard time managing boundaries between your work and non-work life. Before you know it, you\u2019re under an avalanche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While you can\u2019t will yourself to <em>stop <\/em>feeling overwhelmed (trust us, we\u2019ve tried), there are ways to manage it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it\u2019s your job to <strong>lead a team toward solid ground<\/strong>, here are three things you can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Survive an Avalanche: 3 Steps to Manage Overwhelm at Work<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These <strong>real tips for surviving an avalanche<\/strong> can help you as a manager. When everything feels like too much, you need <strong>simple, actionable strategies<\/strong>. These steps will help you steady yourself, tap into strengths, and get through the crisis\u2014without adding more to your plate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Grab something sturdy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a real avalanche, you\u2019re supposed to hang onto a tree or rock to avoid getting disoriented. What can you hold onto to stay grounded and calm when you\u2019re destabilized? Here are some ideas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A<strong> powerful mantra<\/strong>, like \u201cI\u2019ve handled hard things before, and I can handle this too.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>clear purpose<\/strong>\u2014why (or for whom) are you doing this work?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>calming ritual<\/strong>, like lighting a candle, taking a few deep breaths, or going for a walk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no such thing as too grounded or sturdy, so choose something simple that you can do or revisit often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Manager Tip: <\/strong><strong><em>Try to be that \u201csomething sturdy\u201d for your team.<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>Here are some ways to be sturdy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spread calm. \u201cLet\u2019s pause and take a few deep breaths.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remind folks of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementcenter.org\/resources\/managing-towards-resilience-results-create-pac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shared purpose.<\/a> \u201cLet\u2019s remember why we do what we do.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Share resources and reminders.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cHere are some articles that have helped me make sense of what\u2019s happening.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cRemember that our Employee Assistance Program provides free counseling.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cThis is a song that helps me stay grounded.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be present and available. \u201cI\u2019m here to listen.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Swim (apply old skills to a new context)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know that you can swim in snow?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know this isn\u2019t your first rodeo. We all have skills and resources we\u2019ve developed to survive (and thrive!). <strong>Remind yourself what you\u2019re capable of.<\/strong> Tap into the skills you already have to get through a crisis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ask yourself: <\/strong>what has helped me get through hard moments in the past?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Manager Tip: <em>Remind your team of the times they\u2019ve successfully overcome challenges.<\/em><\/strong> Prompt them to reflect on the skills that enabled them to do so: \u201cLast time we had to deal with an emergency, you helped us get through it by making sure that everyone was taken care of. You\u2019re great at staying present and attentive. What if you could tap into that strength now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Create an air pocket<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re buried under snow, digging a small hole around your face to create an air pocket can help you survive for an extra 30 minutes. Consider how you can create \u201cair pockets\u201d\u2014of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementcenter.org\/resources\/check-ins-add-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">connection<\/a>, joy, or rest\u2014for yourself and your team.
